More Precious Than Rubies
Churches’ Social Committees know it, our Health Care Community Life team can’t deny it: you can come up with the most inventive, the most unexpected activities to engage a group, and in the Top 3 favorites, there’ll always be… Bingo! Bingo is one of those beloved games that doesn’t lose its attraction when players reach senior status, quite the contrary. As for the ladies on our Woodbury Health Care neighborhood, not only do they get a thrill while playing, but they especially enjoy going through the prize tray and finding jewelry. That’s because one of our Pastoral Care chaplains, Pastor Marjorie Lauver, is the secret goldsmith behind the handmade baubles.
“Pastor Margie makes beautiful bracelets in a variety of colors and designs,” said Director of Community Life Mary Van Buren.” A beloved member of the Pastoral Care team since 2014, Pastor Margie has been creating jewelry as gifts for families and co-workers over the years. “I have a large dresser full of beading supplies,” she said. “I like to be creative; it’s a great outlet for me. It’s fun, and I enjoy doing it!” Margie’s interests started as she marveled at her grandmother’s trove of jewelry. “After she moved to Florida, many years ago, I would get a small box in the mail every 3 or 4 weeks with some of her costume jewelry in it. It took me years to get it all sent!”
Woodbury’s talented Community Life Leader Ashley Hufnagel had already started making bracelets to be used as bingo prizes. Seeing Ashley’s creations gave Pastor Margie the spark to use her talents to add panache and finesse to the prize tray. “Ashley has residents who love getting and wearing jewelry,” said Margie. “Sometimes picking out their prizes gets to be a little bit… competitive!”
“This is all so kind,” said Mary. “It’s truly a gift from the heart.”
