Appreciation and Gratitude
As the holiday season approaches, it’s a perfect time to reflect on people or things we are thankful for. Thanksgiving serves as a time to look back and appreciate anew the blessings in life, especially those we may have taken for granted.
Many residents in our Brookside memory care residence don’t wait for the holidays to count their blessings. Instead, they spend time every morning talking about what they’re thankful for. Life Engagement Coordinator Ali Neiderer has been leading this daily activity since early 2020. “We come together in gratitude and fellowship,” she says. Together, they sing the hymn, “Count your Blessings” and each participant shares a blessing to add to a daily journal. “With memory being unreliable, we’re always living in the moment here at Brookside, and it’s an occasion to hear what’s important to each resident in that moment.”
Good health is always a top blessing around the room. Other common blessings include the health of family and friends, being in the company of friends, and being thankful for family. For some, it is just looking out the window and appreciating whatever the weather brings that day: the warmth from the sunshine or much-needed rain.
The group recently filled their first journal and have opened fresh pages for a new one, to record expressions of appreciation and gratitude. For Ali, watching each resident live in a positive moment is just what she needs. “If I am having a rough morning, this group activity turns it around. It’s simple but makes a huge difference.” She loves to contribute to the group and shares her own blessings, especially as a mother. She listens to their insight and wisdom, since many were working mothers themselves.
The activity is Ali’s favorite part of each day. “Hearing positivity when you start your morning, sets a great mood for the rest of the day,” she says. This may be a tradition we too could try.
What is your blessing today?
