The Annual Butterfly Release: A Celebration of Life and Lasting Memories

Each spring at Cross Keys Village, a quiet and meaningful tradition takes flight. Since 2008, the Annual Butterfly Release has offered our community a space for remembrance, celebration, and reflection. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 31 at 10:00 a.m. at the pond beside the Mission Point building.

This is more than a beautiful springtime gathering. For many who attend, it becomes an annual tradition, something they return to year after year. Whether you’re honoring someone special who has made a lasting impact on your life or remembering a loved one who has passed, the Butterfly Release provides a peaceful moment to reflect, grieve, and celebrate.

The event brings together generations of families, residents, and team members in a shared experience. Residents from Personal Care and Health Care are brought to the pond, joining families and friends for a morning of music and quiet reflection. As part of the ceremony, the names of those being remembered or honored are read aloud. Then, together, all in attendance release their butterflies into the sky, each flutter a tribute, each flight a symbol of life, transformation, and enduring love.

There is something profoundly moving about watching Monarch butterflies rise into the spring air. On cooler mornings, some butterflies linger gently on the hands of those releasing them, as if offering a tangible moment of connection. That simple gesture of holding a butterfly, even for a few seconds, can evoke deep memories and emotions. It is a symbolic act that brings comfort, healing, and joy.

Whether this will be your first time attending or your tenth, we invite you to join us and experience why so many have made the Butterfly Release a treasured tradition. Come, bring your family, and take part in a beautiful morning of remembrance and renewal.
